- Deborah C. Varnam (1970- ): Deborah C. Varnam earned her bachelor of science in nursing degree from East Carolina University 1992. After practicing nursing at Pitt Memorial Hospital for several years, she returned to her alma mater and graduated with a Masters of Science in Nurisng Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 1999. She is the owner and Chief Executive Officer of the Varnam Family Wellness Center in Shalotte. Over 4,000 patients are treated there each year. Varnam has published in multiple journals; frequently lectures on entrepeneurship, health policy and clinical topics; and teaches part time at the UNC-W School of Nursing. Varnam is very active in professional nursing organizations. She has served as the North Carolina President and Region 4 Director for the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). She is also active in the North Carolina Nursing Association and was named the Practice Nurse of the Year in 2008. Varnam serves on the Advisory Board of the Duke - Johnson and Johnson Nurse Leadership Program at Duke University. She was inducted as a Fellow of the AANP in 2010, an honor bestowed to less than 1% of NPs nationally and into Sigma Theta Tau, the International Nursing Honor Society.
