- Audrey Letitia Umphlett (1902-1978): Audrey Letitia Umphlett was born on January 31, 1902 to Walter and Minnie Umphlett in the Winfall Community of Perquimins County. She graduated from the Sarah Leigh Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in the 1930s and then took a special course in Public Health Nursing from William and Mary College in Richmond, Virginia. When the Perquimins County Health Department opened a few rooms above the drug store in 1943, Nurse Umphlett was the first person hired. She spent the next 23 years, until her retirement, giving immunizations, teaching lay midwives, visiting the sick, working in pediatric, prenatal, general clinics, and being the school nurse. When she retired in the spring of 1966, a special issue of the Perquimins Weekly was dedicated to her.
